Calcium Stearate: A Versatile Compound Introduction Calcium stearate is an organic compound with the chemical formula C. It appears as a white waxy powder and is insoluble in water. Let's explore its properties, production methods, and various applications.Get more news about Calcium Stearate, you can vist our website!Stability: Stable under normal temperatures and pressures Solubility: Insoluble in water, ether, and chloroform; slightly soluble in hot mineral oils. Production Methods Synthesis from Sodium Stearate and Calcium Chloride Solution: Sodium stearate solution (containing 1074 kg/m³ of sodium stearate) is mixed with a calcium chloride solution at around 65°C. The resulting calcium stearate precipitates as a white solid. After filtration, washing, and drying at approximately 90°C, the product is obtained. Direct Method: Calcium oxide (CaO) is suspended in hot water, and stearic acid is dissolved in hot water. Ethanolamine is added to emulsify the stearic acid. The stearic acid emulsion is gradually added to the calcium oxide suspension, resulting in the formation of white insoluble calcium stearate. After filtration and drying, the product is obtained. Decomposition Method: Stearic acid is dissolved in hot water to form a sodium stearate solution. Calcium chloride solution (containing 1074 kg/m³ of calcium chloride) is added to the sodium stearate solution at around 65°C. The resulting calcium stearate precipitates, followed by filtration, washing, and drying. Applications Plastics Industry: Used as a heat stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and as a lubricant in plastic processing and mold release. Enhances gelation speed when combined with basic lead salts or lead soaps in rigid products. Suitable for non-toxic flexible films and medical devices. Rubber Processing: Acts as a plasticizer, softening natural rubber and vulcanized rubber without significantly affecting sulfurization. Other Uses: Lubricant for polyolefin fibers and molded plastics. Thickener for lubricating greases. Waterproofer for textiles. Flatting agent in paints. Plasticizer in vinyl records manufacturing. Conclusion Calcium stearate finds applications across various industries due to its unique properties. From plastics to rubber, it plays a crucial role in enhancing product performance and stability.
