The
Valve seat is probably the most misunderstood mechanical part on a motorcycle and many small engine machines. All engines require a proper mixture of air and fuel for combustion; the strange device known as the carburetor controls the ratio of the fuel/air mixture entering the engine. This sounds simple enough, but there are many carburetor parts that, if not set properly, will at best cause the bike to run badly, or at worst keep it from running at all. The correct ratio of fuel and air is crucial for engine performance.OK, so I had trouble with the carburetor, which frequently happened with this really old car. I must have been stopped because that is when the trouble ordinarily surfaced, but I can’t remember the circumstances leading up to it. I knew what to do, although it was most easily done with two people. I had to flutter the carburetor, if that makes sense, and then turn the key. If I got to the gas pedal fast enough, it worked.I fluttered the carburetor thing and tore away from under the hood to get into the car. In the process, however, I dropped the keys into the engine. It should have been a simple matter to just look under the hood and there the keys would be. But of course, that is not what happened. I looked; I could not find. It was my belief that I had to get a different perspective so I got onto the roof of the car – flaring blue and white striped pants and all – and looked into the engine from every angle I could. It should not be surprising that this scene attracted a little attention. And it was a prolonged tableau because while I saw a lot of stuff under the hood, I did not see any keys. I was looking for a glitter, but as the sun set, the possibility of that grew dimmer and dimmer. The only thing that could get me out of this mess was a Prince Charming-type, and he finally emerged from the building where I was inadvertently parked. He asked me if he could help, I told him my story, and he said he was driving his girlfriend home but would be back with a light. "We’ll find them," he said.I waited for my guy in the car, no longer on its top. He returned with a lantern that shed a lot of light on the situation and in no time, onto a bunch of keys. He reached in, extricated them and put them in my grubby paw. I thanked him – profusely - managed to start the car and off I went. But every time I have keys in my hand and am anywhere near a storm drain or grate, I tighten my grip on the keys. That has been going on for years and I just became aware of it.Which leads me to wonder: what else is going on?To get more and detailed
